How to Replace an Old Outlet, According to an Electrician in The Woodlands
Replacing a dated outlet with a newer tamper-resistant one doesn't necessarily require an electrician in The Woodlands. Remember to make sure the power is off at the breaker box. Then make sure to test for power at the outlet before touching any wires.
Step 1: Shut off the power
Open the breaker box in your home. In many cases, this information is listed on a label on the electrical panel's door or right next to each circuit breaker. Flip the appropriate breaker to the "off" position to shut off the power to the circuit.
Step 2: Remove the Outlet Cover and Test for Power, According to an Electrician in The Woodlands
Use a multimeter to confirm the power is off. Remove the cover, and check the wires connect to the outlet.
Step 3: Take off the Outlet Screws
Remove the screws holding the outlet to the electrical box. Remember where each wire connects, and take a picture with your phone. If you're concerned you might not connect things properly, refer to the picture of the old outlet with its wiring intact. Step 4: Remove the Wires from the Old Outlet
Loosen the screw terminal holding each wire in place on the old outlet and disconnect the wire from the outlet. Set the old outlet aside.
Step 5: Time to Install the New Wires
Attach the wires to the terminals on the new outlet exactly as they were on the old one. The white wire is neutral and connects to a gray screw. Strengthen the screw terminals firmly, making sure each wire is held firmly in place.

Step 6: Put the Outlet back
If everything appears to be working properly, than put the outlet back in place.
Step 7: Restore Power to the Outlet
Switch the circuit breaker back to the "on" position to restore power to the circuit. Now try plugging in something to test the outlet.
