Standby Generators VS Portable Generators; everything you need to know

Being a Houston resident has become a little challenging after recent storms and with the coming Hurricane Season, we have all started thinking about backup power solutions for your home. Choosing the right solution for your home might come with some challenges, specially when the options can be somehow confusing.

portable generator vs standy generator

As your trusted local electricians, we are here to guide you through the battle of the backup Generators, starting with the first contestant:

Portable Generators:

When shopping around for a generator installation you might find the most cost effective option is a Portable Generator and is also the fastest installation in most cases. Portable generators come in 3 different fuel options:

  1. Gasoline fueled generator.

  2. Dual fuel generators that allow you to use gasoline and propane as fuel

  3. Tri fuel generators that allow you to use gasoline, propane or natural gas. This last one can allow you to get a gas connection by a licensed plumber where you can plug your generator too whenever you need to use it.

What do i need to complete the installation?

To complete this installation a licensed electrician will need:

(1) 50 amp inlet box; this is what you will plug your generator cord to and is installed on the opposite side of your panel on the exterior wall.

(1) Interlock kit; this is installed next to your main breaker so you can lock utility power off while using your generator.

(1) 50amp breaker; this is to wire the inlet to your electrical panel. If your electrical panel is full and there is no more breaker space, we can offer a few solutions for it such as rearranging your current breakers and installing tandem breakers. If this solution is not viable for your panel we might need to suggest a panel upgrade as last resort.

(1) 50 amp generator cord; you can use a 25ft cord or 50ft based on the distance you need to set the generator on from where the inlet is.

(1) Quick connect for your Gas connection; this will make operating and fueling your generator much easier. This needs to be performed by a licensed Plumber, we work hand to hand with reputable local plumbers to provide you with this portion of the installation.

(2) Carbon monoxide detectors; if your home doesn't have them we can provide you with 2 battery operated detectors that will help you stay safe while using your generator, specially if you need to run it for extended period of time.

But how to pick the correct size to power your whole house?

unfortunately the answer to this that a portable generator is unlikely to power your whole home. However, you can run most of your essentials and including for most cases, one AC unit with generators that are 12,500 Watts and up. We also recommend to have a soft starter installed to the unit yo plan to power so when your AC kicks on, the soft starter will help control the voltage going through the motor circuits to protect the integrity of your AC unit and your generator will have an easier time at his duty.

How do i operate a portable generator?

It depends on the style generator you have; if its a gasoline fueled one then you will need to source the gasoline and fill up your generator, if you have a dual fuel then you have the option of gasoline and propane tanks that you can refill at a store and then connect to the generator. If you have a tri fuel one, then you can have the option to plug your generator directly to you natural gas line, for this you do need to have a connection arranged by a licensed plumber.

Where do you store your portable generator while not using it?

You can store it in a shed, under a carport with a cover for it, amazon has several good ones available in many sizes. You can store it in your garage while is not at use to avoid carbon monoxide from coming into the home and causing deadly poisoning.

What precautions do i need to take when using a portable generator?
When you complete your installation with our team, we will educate you on how to operate the generator and where is the best outdoor placement for it to keep you and your family safe. Our recommendation is to always be considerate of your home and your neighbors when choosing an outdoor spot for the generator to run.

One of the most dangerous problems with portable generators, and generators in general, is that they produce a high amount of carbon monoxide, way more than idling cars. That is why portable generators should never be used indoors or in partially enclosed areas with little or no ventilation. Even using a portable generator near a home or enclosed area can lead to buildup of CO. The CO can build up quickly and lead to serious injury or death. Carbon monoxide is not visible and its smell is not noticeable and a leak or buildup of it can go undetected. We hope you keep in mind the following directions when using your generator:

1. Always use generators outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents.

2. NEVER use generators in homes, garages, basements, crawl spaces, or other enclosed or partially enclosed areas, even with ventilation.

3. Using a fan or opening doors and windows will not provide sufficient ventilation. 4. Follow manufacturer's instructions.

5. Install battery-operated or plug-in (with battery backup) carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home, following manufacturer's instructions.

6. Test CO alarms often and replace batteries when needed

Standby Generators, also known as Whole home generators:

Standby generators are the ultimate version of back up power and will definitely make you the fancy pants of your block.

To install one you need to hire a licensed and insured electrician who is certified by the brand of your choosing, this will ensure all electrical state code is followed and will maintain the integrity of the manufacturer's warranty.

But how to pick the correct size to power your whole house?

To determine the best size for your home, we complete a load calculation to better understand what your home will need to stay fully powered. We also asses your current electrical panel and electrical service to help us determine the size of Automatic transfer switch(ATS) you will need.

How do i operate a standby generator?

You don't have to manually operate it, when the utility power goes off, the Automatic transfer switch will detect it and turn the generator on. This transfer usually takes only a few seconds. Additionally, your standby generator gets permanently connected to your gas line at the installation and does not need to be detached or moved for the remaining of its life.

  • All the necessary equipment and materials for the installation.

What equipment is needed for the whole home generator installation?

When you complete your consultation with our team, our quote will include everything you need and the main pieces of equipment are:

  • A standby generator

  • One or more automatic transfer switches based on your current electrical panel and service size/set up.

  • Generator concrete pad or a stand to keep your generator raised in case you are in an area prone to flooding

  • Generac Smart Management Module 50 amp

  • 10 year extended warranty from manufacturer

What precautions do i need to take with a standby generator?

Regular maintenance needs to be performed to maintain the functionality and integrity of the manufacturer's warranty, this includes periodic checks, oil changes, and battery inspections. Many models come with self-diagnostic features, simplifying the upkeep.

Hiring a licensed electrician who is certified by the brand to perform maintenance is the best practice in this case as most manufacturers have a maintenance schedule that will need to be performed every time time your generator reaches a certain amount of running hours, battery changes and other essential parts that will ensure your generator will not fail you when you need it just like a vehicle.

Our team can help you tackle this task and we always include the first maintenance for free when you install your standby generator with us.

Why a surge protectors important?

Surge protectors play a crucial role in safeguarding electronic devices and appliances from damage caused by sudden voltage spikes, also known as power surges. Here are several reasons why surge protectors are important:

Protection Against Power Surges: Power surges can occur due to various reasons, including lightning strikes, utility grid switching, or electrical equipment malfunctions. These surges can send excessive voltage through electrical lines, potentially damaging or destroying connected devices. Surge protectors detect these voltage spikes and divert the excess energy away from your devices, preventing costly damage.

Extended Lifespan of Electronics: Electronic devices such as computers, TVs, gaming consoles, and kitchen appliances are susceptible to damage from power surges. By using surge protectors, you provide a layer of defense against voltage fluctuations, thereby extending the lifespan of your valuable electronics. This helps avoid premature failures and reduces the need for frequent replacements. Insurance Policy: Some surge protectors come with connected equipment warranties or insurance policies that provide financial reimbursement for damaged devices, our preferred device comes with a $75k Insurance policy and a 5 year warranty. These warranties offer an additional layer of protection and demonstrate the manufacturer's confidence in the surge protector's effectiveness.
